A major explosion rocked an apartment building in South Austin on Tuesday morning, injuring at least eight people. The blast occurred around 9 a.m. at a four-story building located at 5601 W. West End Ave. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene, with ten ambulances responding to the incident.

At least eight individuals were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Two victims, a man and a woman, were transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Three others, two men and one woman, were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. A single female was admitted to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, while two men were sent to Stroger Hospital of Cook County. One of the injured was reportedly across the street at the time of the explosion.

Firefighters arrived to stabilize the structure, allowing for a thorough search of the building. A final sweep confirmed that all residents had safely evacuated. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blast, and no immediate connection to gas or equipment has been identified.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Chicago Police Department Bomb Unit were on-site to assist with the investigation. The explosion took place on the top floor of the building, on the eastern side, sending large amounts of debris into the street and damaging at least three cars. The roof of one unit collapsed, and several windows were shattered as a result of the force.

Building inspection records reveal that the property has had a history of code violations. Since 2010, it has failed 12 inspections, including issues related to faulty smoke detectors in 2017 and 2018. In 2020, another violation involved a gas appliance not properly connected to a vent. However, after a hearing and follow-up inspection, officials stated that all violations had been corrected.

This incident has raised concerns about building safety and maintenance in the area. Residents are being urged to stay informed and follow any updates from local authorities.
