Hoffman Estates firefighters get new contract
The *Daily Herald* recently published an article highlighting a major development in the ongoing relationship between Hoffman Estates and its firefighters' union. After months of negotiation, the village and the Hoffman Estates Professional Firefighters Association Local 2061 have reached a six-year agreement, replacing the previously disputed three-year contract.
Village Manager Jim Norris expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, emphasizing that the deal was achieved without legal representation. "This is a win for everyone involved," he said. The resolution came after the union won an arbitration ruling last summer that extended their contract retroactively from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2014. However, the village quickly appealed the decision, particularly over one key provision: the granting of 72 hours of unpaid time off annually, which could be used, accrued, or cashed out.
With 83 firefighters on staff, this policy raised concerns among village officials about scheduling and potential financial burden. In the new agreement, the number of hours was reduced to 48, and these must now be used or paid out within the same year they are earned.
The contract also includes wage increases. Firefighters will receive a 2.5% raise in 2012, no increase in 2013, and another 2.5% in January 2014. Additionally, there will be a 1% raise in March 2014, followed by 1% raises on January 1 and June 1 in 2015, 2016, and 2017.
Union President Dean Slater praised the agreement, noting that it balances the needs of the firefighters with the financial realities of the village. He emphasized that reducing pension costs was a top priority during negotiations.
The village’s official website also announced the settlement, stating that the new contract is effective from January 1, 2012, and will run through December 31, 2017. This marks the end of a long-standing dispute, as the previous contract had expired in late 2011. The agreement resolves all outstanding grievances and unfair labor practices, and both sides expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort.
Mayor William D. McLeod commended the negotiating teams for their hard work and open communication. Meanwhile, Union President Slater thanked the village leadership for working together to create a fair and sustainable agreement.
Thanks Dan.
Thanks Dennis.
