At the time of the 100th anniversary of China's rubber industry, in order to more accurately understand the development of China's tires , the reporter interviewed the senior engineer of the Beijing Rubber Industry Research and Design Institute: Professor Chen Zhihong. Through his conversation with him, we learned about the development and current status of China's tire industry and the gap between Chinese and foreign tire products. So, what exactly is the strength of Chinese tire companies and where are the Chinese tires?

China's first generation of radial tires

Chen Zhihong: 2015 is the 100th anniversary of China's rubber industry. We are ready to engage in an event to commemorate the tremendous changes in China's tire industry during the 100 years before liberation, after liberation, before the reform and opening up, and after the reform and opening up. Before China was biased tires, it is now a radial tire. In 2014, the national tire production reached more than 500 million, of which about 90% were radial tires. At the beginning, our technology was imported from abroad. At the same time, our design institute as a scientific research unit also did a lot of experiments. Although we eventually made radial tires, there was still a certain gap with foreign tires. At that time, low profile tires with an aspect ratio of more than 60% were not sold to you abroad. We once went to German manufacturers to negotiate, and the result did not succeed. So no way, or can only develop their own, I did not expect the first time it was successful. Now, our tire technology has been applied throughout the country.

Chinese tires go abroad

Chen Zhihong: In 2014, more than 500 million tires produced in the country consumed more than 300 million domestically, and more than 200 million were exported abroad. The region with the largest number of tires in China is North America, followed by Europe, and other regions such as South America and the Middle East are also areas where we have developed vigorously in recent years. Relative to the well-known foreign brands of tires, domestic tires still have a technical gap, but in terms of cost performance and service life, domestic tires have unparalleled advantages, the United States consumers like Chinese tires. Therefore, the United States has engaged in anti-dumping and anti-subsidy measures in recent years. The Americans themselves oppose it and do not meet the interests of ordinary consumers.

Where are the poor domestic tires?

Chen Zhihong: The gap between domestic and foreign tires is not as big as we think. Although we may not be as big as Michelin and Pirelli, these brands are not much different from Hankook and Kumho, and even have higher quality than Kumho. Therefore, I often tell the taxi driver that you don't buy brand-name tires blindly. Domestic tires are cheap and durable and are worth buying. Domestic tires suffer from a large degree of loss in brand awareness, and today's tire manufacturers have not yet realized the awareness of a big and strong brand. There are many brands on the market and they are not widely recognized by the public. In addition, many tire companies in the country still use manual operations, resulting in low production efficiency and uneven product quality.

How do domestic tires develop in the future?

Chen Zhihong: First of all, it is definitely a technical improvement, such as the introduction of environmentally friendly materials to reduce the harmful substances in tires; reduce rolling resistance, reduce fuel consumption; reduce tire noise and so on. These domestic tire manufacturers are doing, and it is expected that more than a quarter of tires in 2015 will meet the green tire standards. Second, the introduction of automated operating equipment, such as robots, to increase production efficiency and yield. On the other hand, domestic manufacturers should have a certain degree of brand awareness, integrate scattered tire companies, and concentrate their efforts on making technology, production, and brand promotion bigger and stronger. Domestic vehicle manufacturers should also consider buying domestic tires, just as Korean cars only purchase Korean tires, and Japanese cars only purchase Japanese tires.

Chen Zhihong: In recent years, domestically produced tires have also made innovative attempts in various fields, and many special tires have appeared. For example, Ortega's explosion-proof tires, its technology can be said to be better than Michelin's explosion-proof tires. Michelin just makes a support inside the tires so that your tires can still travel a distance after being punctured. The Ottoman's explosion-proof tires use a memory coating inside the tires. Even if they are punctured by sharp objects, they will not cause air leakage. This is very practical in some special circumstances. Therefore, the efforts made by domestic tire companies are obvious to all. I hope and believe that in the next few years, domestic tires will have certain breakthroughs in technology, quality, and brand, and will be recognized by both domestic and foreign users. product!
