GE Lighting recently announced that it will close two traditional lighting manufacturing facilities in Lexington, Kentucky, USA in August 2017. Closing the two plants is expected to affect about 400 jobs in the city. The two plants are the Lexington Light Factory and the Somerset Glass Factory. The Lexington Lamps Factory produces traditional luminaires and employs approximately 139 workers. The glass factory produces halogen lamps and employs 71 people. Consumer demand for traditional lighting products has hit a record low. In a statement, GE said that the Lexington plant's production capacity is about 15%. A spokesperson for the company said in a statement: In the future, GE Lighting will focus entirely on innovation and LED technology. By 2020, LED lights will account for half of the US market and 80% of global lighting revenue will come from LEDs. Jack Mazurak, a cabinet spokesperson for Kentucky's economic development, said that at the market demand, the Somerset plant will shift 20% of its production capacity to LED lighting. The Kentucky Economic Development Cabinet will continue to work to reduce the impact on GE Lighting employees in Kentucky.
