Of interest … Make-A-Wish Foundation and fire department help 7-year-old
Excerpts from whsv.com:
Monday was a dream come true for a courageous 7-year-old named Javi Guzman in Hanover County, Virginia. After months of anticipation—delayed due to the pandemic—Javi was finally sworn in as the youngest member of the Hanover County fire department.
"He's been counting down the days," his mom, Amy Guzman, shared with a smile. Even as a toddler, Javi would run outside at the sound of sirens, his eyes lighting up with excitement. His father, Martin Guzman, recalled how young Javi would often say, "I want to be a firefighter someday." With encouragement from his parents, Javi’s dream has now become a reality.
The special ceremony that made this moment possible was organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation, who didn't hesitate to grant Javi's heartfelt wish. "It was an easy yes," said Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland. "Javi is such an inspiration to us all with his courage and determination."
Javi has faced challenges most people never encounter. Diagnosed with a form of childhood blood cancer at a very young age, he has since achieved remission. Yet, his admiration for firefighters stems from a deeper place. Just months ago, the Guzman family endured the devastating aftermath of a house fire, and Javi found solace and strength in the firefighters who came to their aid.
Chief Piland explained, "These are the very firefighters who responded to his home during the fire." And today, Javi is officially part of that brotherhood. As part of his big day, he experienced what it means to be a firefighter firsthand: riding in a fire truck, touring the station, climbing high on a ladder, and even using a fire hose. His classmates were also invited to join in the celebration, making it a memorable event for everyone involved.
One of Javi's most cherished requests was to take a helicopter ride, which Make-A-Wish happily arranged for him. It was a day filled with joy, adventure, and unforgettable moments, surrounded by love and support.
Amy Guzman reflected on the impact of such experiences: "When you have that kind of support, it makes you feel like you can overcome anything."
Make-A-Wish is currently looking for volunteers to continue helping kids like Javi. If you're inspired by stories like his and want to make a difference, click here to learn more about how you can get involved.
