Join me on-site with Jack Kessler, who’s walking us through a distinctive coil setup at a New York City middle school... Unusual projects often require innovative designs. At John S. Roberts J.H.S., the steam coils within this custom unit were uniquely arranged in a vertical orientation with horizontal airflow. This design was crucial to manage condensate accumulation effectively. Once steam transitions into liquid form, it must be drained from the coils. Otherwise, the liquid inside the tubes risks freezing, leading to potential coil ruptures due to the expansion of frozen water. When replicating this coil design, one of the key considerations was angling the return header downwards to allow gravity to assist in draining the condensate naturally. Under full steam pressure, the condensate could typically be pushed out of the coil. But when operating at half-load or lower pressures, the assistance of the pitched header becomes essential to ensure proper drainage.
