Jeff Dill, founder of the Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance, has identified five key warning signs known as R.A.I.L.S. These are crucial indicators that someone may be at risk of self-harm:

R - Recklessness/Impulsiveness: This could include unusual behaviors like buying weapons if the person has never shown interest in them before.

A - Anger: Uncharacteristic or extreme anger over small issues can signal underlying emotional distress.

I - Isolation: A firefighter who suddenly pulls away from the team, avoids calls, or stops participating in training might be struggling internally.

L - Loss of Confidence: Many first responders have told FBHA they've lost confidence in their abilities due to personal or emotional struggles.

S - Sleep Deprivation: Lack of sleep can be a sign of stress, anxiety, or even PTSD, which can go unnoticed until it's too late.
