Working fire in Chicago, 4-11-24
I just got back from covering a fire down in Chicago. It happened at 6641 South Michigan Avenue on April 11th. By the time I arrived, most of the action had died down, but I still managed to snap some great shots of the firefighters from the 19th Battalion. They were working hard to wrap things up when I got there, and I tried to capture their efforts as best as I could.
The images don’t do justice to the intensity of the scene earlier that day, but they give you a sense of the dedication and teamwork involved in firefighting. The full gallery with more detailed shots is available on our website over at #chicagoareafire.com. If you're interested in seeing more photos, make sure to check it out!
These pictures reminded me of how much I admire these firefighters. They’re always ready to step into dangerous situations to protect others, and moments like this really highlight their bravery. I wish I could have been there sooner to see everything unfold live, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to document their work.
Here’s one shot I took that I particularly liked—it shows the firefighters gathered around after the blaze was under control. You can see the exhaustion etched on their faces, but also the relief that comes with knowing they’ve done their job well. Another image that caught my eye features a firetruck parked nearby, its red lights still glowing faintly in the background. It's a stark reminder of the chaos that had unfolded just hours before.
I hope these photos can serve as a small tribute to the Chicago Fire Department and all they do to keep our communities safe. If you know any of these firefighters or have connections to them, please share these images so they can see how appreciated they are. For now, I’ll leave you with a final thought: no matter where you are or what you’re doing, always take a moment to appreciate those who put themselves on the line every single day.
