Double LODD in Toledo, 1/26/14

Tragic news from Toledo on Sunday. Two firefighters lost their lives while battling a fire at an apartment building in North Toledo — the first such fatalities since 1981. According to *The Blade*, Stephen A. Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31, were killed after sustaining injuries during the blaze at 528 Magnolia St. Machcinski had served for over 15 years, while Dickman was just months into his career, having joined the department in September. His entire class of 51 recruits, sworn in on September 3, had not yet graduated. The two firefighters were among those who entered the six-unit building after the fire was reported around 2:47 p.m. At a press conference held that evening, Fire Chief Luis Santiago expressed deep sorrow, stating that both men suffered fatal injuries inside the burning structure. They were eventually pulled from the flames and taken to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. Mayor D. Michael Collins praised the bravery of first responders, noting that firefighters "run into harm’s way instead of running away." He also mentioned that Dickman’s parents, who live in Mansfield, Ohio, were escorted to Toledo by the Ohio Highway Patrol. Photos from the scene showed firefighters working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with one being carried out on a stretcher as smoke filled the air. The building, a two-story structure built in 1877, has a history of fires dating back over two decades. It has been owned by Ray and Mariam Abouarab since 1992. The property, now valued at $101,500, is located near Huron Market. The owner, who watched the emergency response, said seven people lived in the building, but no one was injured. He also noted that he recently spent $2,500 repairing plumbing issues caused by the recent cold snap. Abouarab previously owned another apartment complex that caught fire twice within six months in the early 2000s. That building, sold in 2007, was on fire in August 2002 and again in January 2003. This tragedy has left the community in shock, with many expressing their condolences and support for the families of the fallen firefighters. As the investigation continues, the city remembers two brave men who gave their lives in service. Thanks, Chris.
