Engine 61 Museum tour (more)
I just got this message from Brian Kazmierzak:
Al Kirchner, the retired Chief of the US Marine Corps Fire Service and a lifelong fan of the Chicago Fire Department—especially Engine 61 and the 16th Battalion when it operated out of Engine 45 under Bill Foran and his team—has brought back vivid memories of Chicago for all of us. Al was not only a Notre Dame student firefighter but also had a deep connection with Long Island, New York before heading off to work for the Washington DC Fire Department. Eventually, he joined the US Fire Administration and became the Superintendent of the National Fire Academy.
Interestingly enough, Al’s career took him from student firefighter to a prominent figure in the firefighting world, even developing a personal friendship with Commissioner Quinn. His contributions have kept the spirit of places like Engine 61 alive for many of us who cherished those moments.
For me personally, serving under Lieutenant Pat Durkin and later Captain Keith Witt at Engine 61 created some unforgettable experiences. And talk about fate—it turns out that Keith Witt retired as a chief in the 18th Battalion of the Chicago Fire Department and now works alongside me here at Penn Township Fire Department in Indiana.
Check out these photos from Brian Kazmierzak capturing the essence of Engine 61's museum. The badges, vintage helmets, and memorabilia really transport you back in time. It’s amazing how these artifacts keep the legacy of firefighters alive, reminding us of the dedication and courage shown by so many over the years.
[Attached are several images showcasing the Engine 61 museum, including helmets, badges, and various exhibits. Each picture highlights different aspects of the firefighting culture and history.]
These photos truly capture the heart and soul of what it means to be part of such a storied department. It’s fascinating to see how places like Engine 61 have shaped the careers of so many, including my own journey here in Pennsylvania.
