Libertyville 2nd Alarm Fire 3-27-13 (pt 1)

<

Libertyville Fire Department responded swiftly to reports of a fire at Jamaican Gardens North, located at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). Upon arrival, firefighters encountered thick smoke obstructing visibility along Route 176, with a significant blaze raging on the eastern portion of the property near what used to be the retail store entrance. A swift attack was launched, and the fire escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm as it continued to spread. The business had been closed to the public for several years and was reportedly vacant. Libertyville Tower 461 and Engine 463 were stationed on the eastern side of the property. However, the rapid progression of the fire soon engulfed additional structures on the western side, where access was severely restricted. Lake Forest Tower Ladder 421 was positioned on the northern driveway, while Countryside Engine 412 took up a strategic spot at the northwest corner. As the flames intensified, the alarm was upgraded to a second alarm, summoning additional resources to the scene. A special request was made for the Division 1 MVU from Wheeling, but the unit was ultimately not deployed and was released before the fire was fully contained. Firefighters utilized master streams from two tower ladders, along with multiple hand lines and portable equipment. Libertyville Engine 463, Countryside Engine 412, Lake Bluff Engine 517, and Knollwood Engine 44 were all actively pumping water to combat the inferno. After approximately three hours of relentless effort, the fire was finally brought under control. Supporting departments included Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads, Highland Park with a ladder truck, and Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with additional engines. Chief officers from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest were also present. Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro were on-site to oversee operations. This incident marks the beginning of a three-part series documenting the extensive damage caused by this fire. *Photos by Jeff Rudolph* [Insert Images Here]
