Libertyville 2nd Alarm Fire 3-27-13 (pt 1)

<

Libertyville Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Jamaican Gardens North, situated at 14595 W. Rockland Road (Route 176). Upon arrival, firefighters encountered thick smoke obstructing visibility along Route 176 and discovered a significant blaze raging on the east side of the property near what used to be the retail store entrance. An immediate attack was initiated, and the incident was escalated to a MABAS Box Alarm due to the rapid spread of the flames. The business had been closed to the public for several years and was believed to be vacant. Libertyville’s Tower 461 and Engine 463 were dispatched to the eastern section of the property. However, the fast-moving fire quickly engulfed additional structures on the western side, where access was limited. Lake Forest's Tower Ladder 421 was stationed at the northern driveway, while Countryside Engine 412 took position at the northwest corner. As the intensity of the fire intensified, a second alarm was triggered, bringing in reinforcements from neighboring departments. A special request was made for the Division 1 Mobile Ventilation Unit (MVU) from Wheeling, but it wasn’t deployed and was later released before the fire was fully contained. Multiple fire streams were utilized by the two tower ladders, including master streams, hand lines, and multi-versals. In addition to Libertyville Engine 463 and Countryside Engine 412, support was provided by Lake Bluff Engine 517 and Knollwood Engine 44, all actively pumping water onto the inferno. After approximately three hours, the fire was finally brought under control. Other departments that sent resources to the scene included Mundelein, North Chicago, and Lake Zurich with ambulances; Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Gurnee with rescue squads; Highland Park with a ladder truck; and Waukegan, Deerfield, and Newport Township with engines. Chief officers from Countryside, Grayslake, Gurnee, Lake Bluff, and Lake Forest were also present. Notable individuals on site included Tim Olk, Jeff Rudolph, and Larry Shapiro. This marks the first installment of a three-part series documenting this devastating fire. *Photos taken by Jeff Rudolph.* --- **Additional Details:** Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion moments before the fire erupted, which likely contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. Local residents expressed relief that no injuries were reported, though many expressed concerns about potential structural damage to nearby properties. Fire officials are currently investigating the cause of the fire and have advised residents to remain cautious as cleanup efforts continue. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local updates and emergency alerts. Community members are reminded to check their insurance policies and document any damages for future reference. Stay tuned for further developments and updates in the coming days.
