Of interest … Make-A-Wish Foundation and fire department help 7-year-old
**From whsv.com:**
Last Monday was a day filled with pure joy and inspiration for young Javi Guzman, a 7-year-old from Hanover County, Virginia. For months, Javi had eagerly awaited his Make-A-Wish day, which had been postponed due to the pandemic. That wait finally came to an end as Javi was officially welcomed into the Hanover County firehouse family as its newest—and youngest—firefighter.
“I’ve seen him run outside every time a siren passes by,†Javi’s mom, Amy Guzman, shared, her voice tinged with pride. “Ever since he was little, he’d say, ‘I want to be a firefighter one day.’ And now, here we are.â€
Javi’s dream became a reality through a touching ceremony organized by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “It was an easy decision to make,†said Hanover Fire Chief Jethro Piland. “Javi has shown incredible courage and resilience, qualities that make him an inspiration to everyone at the station.â€
Indeed, Javi has faced more challenges than most people ever do. Diagnosed with a form of childhood blood cancer at a very young age, he has battled through it all. Thankfully, he is now in remission. But beyond his personal struggles, there was another reason Javi felt such a deep connection to the firefighters. Just months prior, his family had experienced a devastating house fire, and it was the firefighters who responded that day who inspired him the most.
“These are the same firefighters who helped save our home,†Chief Piland explained. “And now, Javi gets to join their ranks.â€
The ceremony was nothing short of magical. Dressed in a miniature firefighter uniform, Javi was sworn in during a heartfelt event attended by his entire class. He then embarked on an unforgettable adventure, riding in a firetruck, exploring the firehouse, and even scaling great heights on a ladder. There were moments of excitement too, like when he used a fire hose to spray water, and tackled an obstacle course designed just for him.
But perhaps the highlight of the day was Javi’s request to ride in a helicopter—a dream granted by Make-A-Wish. It was a moment that left a lasting impression on everyone present, including his classmates, who cheered him on throughout the day.
Amy Guzman couldn’t help but reflect on how much support her family has received over the years. “When you have people like this in your corner,†she said, fighting back tears, “you feel like you can overcome anything.â€
As Javi continues to heal and grow stronger, his story serves as a reminder of the power of hope and community. Make-A-Wish is currently looking for volunteers to help bring similar dreams to life for other children. This experience was not just a wish fulfilled—it was a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the generosity of those willing to lend a hand.
