Unconscious workers rescued from Long Grove sewer
This message comes from Larry Shapiro:

As I'm standing here watching the aftermath of an intense emergency situation, I thought I'd jot down some quick details while it's still fresh in my mind. Just before noon today, two workers from a private contractor were inside a sanitary sewer on Route 53, west of Old McHenry Road, when they suddenly collapsed due to toxic fumes. It happened just under a mile from the Long Grove Fire Department station.
When the firefighters arrived, they found a Lake County Sheriff’s deputy already on the scene, attempting to help another person pull one of the workers out through the manhole. The tension was palpable as everyone worked quickly to ensure both workers received the care they needed.
Looking around, you can see the contractor’s equipment still nearby, with a hose line clearly leading into the manhole. It’s a stark reminder of how dangerous these situations can be, especially when working underground where hazardous gases can accumulate without warning.
The Long Grove Fire Department, along with Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Buffalo Grove, sent suppression teams and technical rescue personnel. Meanwhile, Deerfield and Palatine Rural Ambulance services arrived with life-saving equipment. Thanks to the quick thinking and skillful actions of the firefighters, who were breathing on oxygen, both workers were retrieved from the sewer within minutes. They were immediately revived and rushed to a local hospital for further treatment.
In incidents like this, safety protocols demand that all personnel involved undergo thorough decontamination due to the noxious substances present in the sewer. Even the deputy sheriff was evaluated on-site to ensure his well-being after being exposed to the same environment.
It’s heartening to see how efficiently emergency responders work together in moments like these. The firefighters’ gear has been carefully bagged and will be cleaned at the station to prepare for future emergencies. Another critical aspect is ensuring the contractor understands the risks and implements proper safety measures moving forward.
For those interested, more images capturing the scene are available [here]. It’s a powerful reminder of why we need skilled first responders and vigilant oversight when it comes to construction and maintenance work involving confined spaces.

I’ll keep an eye out for any updates on the condition of the workers and share what I learn if anything changes.
