Unconscious workers rescued from Long Grove sewer
Larry Shapiro sent this update:
This morning, around noon, two workers from a private contractor were inside a sanitary sewer on Route 53, just west of Old McHenry Road. They were suddenly overcome by toxic fumes that caused them to lose consciousness. Fortunately, the Long Grove Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene, which is less than a mile from their station. They found a Lake County Sheriff's deputy already there, attempting to help another person pull one of the workers out through the manhole.
The situation was serious, but thanks to the swift response of the firefighters, both workers were successfully retrieved from the sewer within minutes. Once pulled out, they were immediately given medical attention and then transported to a nearby hospital. All personnel involved, including the deputy, were thoroughly checked for any exposure to harmful gases or substances, as a precautionary measure. Firefighters had to take extra care during the rescue due to the hazardous environment.
The contractor's equipment, including a hose line leading into the manhole, was clearly visible at the scene. Additional support came from Lincolnshire-Riverwoods and Buffalo Grove fire departments, who brought suppression units and technical rescue teams. Meanwhile, Deerfield and Palatine Rural ambulances were dispatched to ensure both workers and emergency responders received proper medical evaluations.
Another critical aspect of the operation involved properly handling contaminated gear. Firefighters carefully bagged all equipment exposed to the sewer contents to be cleaned later at the station. This step was crucial to prevent further contamination or health risks.
Route 53 had its right lane blocked temporarily by the contractor’s vehicles, adding complexity to the rescue efforts. However, thanks to the coordinated actions of all involved agencies, the situation was managed effectively. For those interested in more visuals, additional photos can be found HERE.
It’s always a reminder of the dangers faced daily by workers in confined spaces and the importance of having well-trained emergency responders ready to act swiftly when incidents occur.
A rubber seal is a flexible and durable product used to create a watertight and airtight seal between two surfaces. It is commonly made from various types of rubber materials such as EPDM, silicone, neoprene, or natural rubber.
Rubber seals are widely used in various industries, including automotive, construction, electronics, and manufacturing. They are used to prevent leaks, reduce noise and vibration, and provide insulation. Some common applications of rubber seals include door and window seals, gaskets, O-rings, pipe seals, and weatherstripping.
Rubber seals offer several benefits. They are resistant to water, chemicals, UV rays, and extreme temperatures, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They are also flexible and can easily conform to irregular surfaces, ensuring a tight and secure seal. Additionally, rubber seals have excellent durability and longevity, making them a cost-effective solution.
Rubber seals are available in various shapes, sizes, and thicknesses to suit different applications. They can be customized to meet specific requirements, such as temperature resistance, hardness, and color. Installation of rubber seals is usually straightforward, and they can be easily replaced if damaged or worn out.
