Beijing closed 40 "double high" companies during the year

In response to worsening air quality, the Beijing Municipal Government has announced a series of strict measures aimed at reducing pollution. By the end of June, several major industrial facilities, including the organic chemical plant of Beijing Dongfang Petrochemical Co., Ltd., Beijing Chemical Industry Group Dayou, and Huadian (Beijing) Thermal Power Co., Ltd., will be required to halt production. By the end of December, a total of 40 high-polluting and energy-intensive enterprises will be shut down as part of the city’s broader strategy to improve air quality. The government's latest announcement highlights the need for key polluters to take immediate action. For instance, Shougang Corporation is expected to further reduce its production capacity by 4 million tons and focus on effective pollution control before relocating. Yanshan Petrochemical Corporation will complete upgrades to its No. 2 and No. 3 catalytic cracker flue gas treatment systems, as well as address methyl chloride tail gas emissions. Additionally, companies involved in industries that emit volatile organic compounds—such as organic chemical production, printing, and furniture manufacturing—will implement stricter measures this year. These include temporarily closing operations during peak pollution periods and installing advanced exhaust gas purification equipment to minimize environmental impact. The initiative reflects Beijing's growing commitment to sustainable development and public health, as it continues to tackle one of the most pressing challenges facing the city. With these steps, the government aims to not only meet national environmental standards but also set a benchmark for other cities across China.
