Chicago Still Alarm fire 8-24-13
This message came from Dan Shevlin:
At approximately 0615 hours on August 24, 2013, I responded to a structure fire at the 5300 block of South Shields Avenue. When I arrived, smoke was already visible coming from the north side of a one-and-a-half-story building. The fire had already spread from the walls into the attic, but thankfully, firefighters were already on scene and working hard to contain it. Engine 84 was the first unit on the scene, with additional support from Engines 50, 361, 328, 247, 555, and 273, as well as RIT Team 3210 and 249.
By the time I arrived, they had managed to open up the roof and had one line running. Thanks to their quick action, the fire was quickly brought under control and extinguished. It was impressive to see how efficiently everyone worked together to get the situation under wraps.
Attached are some photos I took while on scene. These images give you a better idea of what the situation looked like when I arrived.

It’s always a humbling experience to witness the dedication and skill of our firefighters in action. They truly do an incredible job, often putting themselves in harm's way to keep us safe.
Best regards,
Dan Shevlin
