Wish comes true for firefighter’s daughter
Today was a special day for the Spicka family as they said goodbye to six-year-old Paige, who is celebrating her wish to visit Disney World thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Paige, who was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, has faced more challenges in her short life than most people experience in a lifetime. But today, she was surrounded by friends, family, and firefighters who made her trip feel like a true adventure.
The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District (LRFPD) came together with Chicago firefighters from O’Hare Airport to throw a heartfelt send-off party at Station 53. The event featured Disney movies, cake, an obstacle course, and a pinata — all designed to make the day memorable for Paige and her family. Firefighters even presented her with a custom set of turnout gear, a unique gift that symbolized her journey as a “firefighter†on her big trip.
After the party, it was time to head to O’Hare Airport. A special procession was organized, with LRFPD Engine 51 leading the way, accompanied by a command car. Paige sat comfortably in a pink car seat in the front, communicating with her dad through a headset to let him know she was ready to go. The trip was not just about getting to the airport — it was about making sure Paige felt safe, loved, and celebrated every step of the way.
Upon arrival, Chicago firefighters from the CFD (Chicago Fire Department) greeted them with open arms. They handed Paige a CFD t-shirt and escorted her through the terminal, ensuring she had everything she needed for her flight. The Lincolnshire team was also there for a final farewell, sharing one last moment with the Spicka family before they boarded their flight.
This wasn’t just a simple send-off — it was a celebration of hope, strength, and community. Thanks to the support of the fire departments, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and the efforts of photographer Tim Olk, who captured every moment, this day will be remembered for years to come.
From the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District:
"Today was a day of celebration. We celebrated a gift — a six-year-old gift named Paige Spicka. Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, she has gone through more in her short time than most would in a lifetime. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wisconsin Chapter, Paige was granted her wish to visit Disney World in Orlando. She was given a send-off by her second family — the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4224, Chief Fred Kruger, and the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Department. We want to thank everyone who helped make this day so special, including Chief Kruger, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas (CFD), Deputy District Chief Jerry Knapp (CFD), Larry Langford (CFD), Karen Pride (Chicago Aviation), Tim Olk, and the crews from CFD E-10, HazMat 5-1-2, and Squad 7."
Paige’s journey to Disney World is more than just a vacation — it's a testament to courage, love, and the power of community.
