Wish comes true for firefighter’s daughter
Today, the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and Chicago firefighters came together in a heartfelt celebration for Paige Spicka, a six-year-old girl with hypoplastic left heart syndrome who has faced more challenges in her short life than most people do in a lifetime. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Paige’s dream of visiting Disney World in Orlando finally came true. To mark the special occasion, the community organized a touching send-off at Station 53, where firefighters, families, and friends gathered to say goodbye.
The event featured Disney movies, cake, an obstacle course, and a pinata, all designed to make Paige feel like a princess on her big day. She even broke the pinata using a short pike pole, showing off her courage and enthusiasm. A custom set of turnout gear was presented to her as a token of appreciation from the fire department, symbolizing the support she received from her "second family."
After the party, it was time to head to O’Hare Airport. A special procession was arranged, with Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Engine 51 leading the way, accompanied by a command car. Paige sat comfortably in a pink car seat in the front, communicating with her dad through a headset, ensuring everyone knew she was ready to go. The trip to the airport was filled with excitement and smiles.
Upon arrival, Chicago firefighters from the CFD greeted them, presenting Paige with a CFD t-shirt and escorting her to the gate. The Lincolnshire team joined them at the jetway for a final farewell before she boarded the plane. It was a beautiful moment, highlighting the deep bond between the communities and their shared love for helping those in need.
This unforgettable day was captured by photographer Tim Olk, whose work truly brought the emotion and spirit of the event to life. His photos tell a story of kindness, bravery, and the power of dreams coming true. You can view his full gallery here.
From the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District:
"Today was a day of celebration. We celebrated a gift—Paige Spicka, a six-year-old with a heart full of strength. Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, she has endured more in her short time than most would in a lifetime. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wisconsin Chapter, her wish to visit Disney World became reality. She was honored by her second family, the Lincolnshire Riverwoods Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 4224, Chief Fred Kruger, and the entire Lincolnshire Riverwoods Fire Department. Surrounded by friends and family, she was driven to O’Hare International Airport, where she was met by our brothers from the Chicago Fire Department Local 2 and escorted to the gate. We extend our deepest thanks to Chief Kruger, Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner John McNicholas (CFD), Deputy District Chief Jerry Knapp (CFD), Larry Langford (CFD), Karen Pride (Chicago Aviation), Tim Olk, and the crews from CFD E-10, HazMat 5-1-2, and Squad 7."
