The largest domestic bisphenol A project started in Shanghai
With a total investment of nearly 1 billion yuan, Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals Co., Ltd. has launched a project with an annual production capacity of 120,000 tons of bisphenol A. The facility broke ground on July 28th in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone, marking the start of construction for the largest domestic bisphenol A plant. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2007, signaling a major step forward in China's chemical industry development.
This project is a key component of the ongoing expansion of product projects within the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone and plays a vital role in extending the region’s product chain. The phenol and acetone required for the production will be fully supplied by Sinopec through a dedicated 200,000-ton-per-year phenol/acetone plant located within the zone, ensuring competitive pricing and a stable supply. Additionally, the project will benefit from the integrated infrastructure of the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, including water, electricity, steam, and nitrogen, which supports efficient resource sharing among enterprises.
By leveraging this integrated system, the project enhances collaboration and interdependence across the industrial chain, reducing overall costs and maximizing the advantages of shared resources. The facility will also feature advanced DCS (Distributed Control System) technology, enabling a high level of automation. In line with clean production principles, the plant will adopt a world-leading ion exchange resin method for bisphenol A production. This process uses phenol and acetone as primary raw materials, catalyzing their synthesis in a reactor equipped with ion exchange resin.
Compared to traditional hydrochloric acid-based methods, the ion exchange process offers greater stability, higher production capacity, lower raw material consumption, and superior product quality. It also simplifies the separation of catalysts and reaction materials, eliminates the use of acids, and avoids the generation of phenol-containing wastewater or equipment corrosion, significantly reducing environmental impact.
In addition, it has been reported that 14 major projects are set to be completed and commissioned in the second half of the year, further strengthening the development of the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park and reinforcing its position as a leading industrial hub in the region.
