Yuchai's four-valve engines operating at high oil prices highlight the leading edge
Oil prices have climbed again. Starting from midnight on May 24th, China's refined oil prices were increased once more, with gasoline, diesel, and aviation kerosene each rising by 500 yuan per ton. This marks the first price adjustment since March 26th, and it is also the second time this year, with the largest increase in oil prices to date. The retail price has gone up by more than 4 cents. Recently, international oil prices have surged again, fluctuating around $70 per barrel. Experts predict that oil prices will remain high throughout the year.
As the automotive industry, especially the engine sector, is closely linked to refined oil, what are their views on the current situation of rising oil prices? To explore this, a reporter interviewed Yuchai Machinery Co., Ltd., a leading Chinese diesel engine manufacturer.
According to Yuchai’s technical experts, the company has long been committed to "providing clean power and creating a harmonious environment," focusing on energy conservation and environmental protection. This sense of responsibility has driven Yuchai to make significant breakthroughs in technological innovation, continuously launching more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly products. Among these, the four-valve technology has played a key role in reducing energy consumption.
Industry experts explain that reducing intake and exhaust resistance and properly matching the fuel injection nozzle with the combustion chamber can effectively lower engine energy use. The four-valve technology further increases the flow cross-sectional area for intake and exhaust without increasing the bore diameter, which helps reduce resistance and improve air intake capacity. It also enhances the matching between the nozzle and combustion chamber, leading to better fuel atomization and more complete combustion. As a result, the four-valve design is an effective way to save energy and is widely used in developed countries. For domestic heavy trucks to gain a larger share in the global market, adopting four-valve engines is essential. Additionally, the central government promotes an energy-saving society, and although four-valve engines are not currently mandatory, future regulations cannot be ruled out.
Yuchai has been developing four-valve engines for several years, albeit quietly. In 2002, Yuchai conducted its first test of the YC6L four-valve engine. By the end of 2002, Dongfeng Liuzhou Automobile and Shaanxi Zhongqi also developed prototypes using the YC6L engine. In 2003, Dongfeng Liuzhou Automobile introduced the YC6L heavy-duty truck into the market, while Yuchai continued to promote the YC6M series. Yuchai adopted a two-step strategy, using the two-valve 6M engine as a transitional model before introducing the four-valve version. The advantages of the 6M two-valve engine were well-received by users. With rising oil prices and growing demand, Yuchai launched the four-valve version in the second half of 2005.
On February 26, China's first YC6L four-valve engine meeting Euro IV standards was officially launched at Yuchai, reflecting the company's new strategic direction of “new Yuchai, new thinking, and new development.†On April 13, JAC held a heavy truck delivery ceremony in Shenzhen, featuring Yuchai’s 6M four-valve engine. This event, held in the birthplace of China’s reform and opening-up, caused a major stir in the industry. Many saw it as the beginning of Yuchai’s “Spring Story†and a new era for China’s internal combustion engine industry.
Just after May 18, the Yuchai 6M four-valve engine made a strong appearance at the Dongfeng Tianlong launch event, becoming a focal point for attendees.
The Yuchai four-valve engine includes two main series: YC6L and YC6M. The YC6L offers power ranging from 280 to 350 horsepower, suitable for passenger cars up to 13.7 meters and heavy trucks up to 15 tons, with emissions meeting Euro II, III, and IV standards. The YC6M provides 320 to 390 horsepower, fitting larger passenger cars and heavy trucks, and meets Euro II and III requirements.
Both series are advanced heavy-duty engines based on modern global diesel technologies. They use German FEV-specific combustion systems for efficient combustion, P7100 fuel pumps for better atomization, wet cylinder liners, and European cooling piston technology for superior performance. Patented gear meshing technology ensures lower noise levels, while strict mechanical development procedures guarantee reliability, longevity, and a 250,000 km or 20-month warranty.
In terms of high-pressure oil pump configuration, the YC6M can be equipped with either BOSCH or domestic options depending on user preference and budget.
Yuchai believes that user satisfaction is the best recognition. Dealers report that the Yuchai 6M four-valve engine has created a big impact. Many customers now prefer Yuchai’s four-valve engines, with some purchasing them multiple times. A customer in Shandong, after consulting with a technician, bought two 6M four-valve engines and upgraded his existing models. He recognized the superiority of the four-valve engine over traditional two-valve models, finding it both more efficient and comfortable.
With China’s oil prices remaining high, Yuchai, once a leader in supercharging, moderate cooling, and emission upgrades, has introduced the four-valve engine at the right time, showcasing its competitive edge. “To satisfy public demand with excellence and leadership†is Yuchai’s mission. We believe Yuchai, with its strong sense of social responsibility, will continue to contribute significantly to building a resource-saving and environmentally friendly society.
