Boral, one of Australia’s largest building products companies, purchased three Western Star 4800FX dump trucks equipped with Allison 4500 series gearboxes in 2009. Boral has hundreds of heavy-duty trucks of various configurations throughout Australia, including tractors, haul trucks, tanker trucks, asphalt transporters, dump trucks and concrete mixer trucks. The company has been equipped with an Allison transmission for its large fleet of concrete mixer trucks. However, it has never used a heavy truck equipped with an Allison transmission weighing more than 42 tons.

In 2009, Boral purchased and put into operation three Western Star 4800FX dump trucks equipped with Allison 4500 series transmissions. An important reason why Boral chose Western Stars heavy-duty vehicles was that the Allison 4500 Series transmission was standard on Western Stars. Due to the good results of the test, Boral purchased another five Western Star dumpers equipped with Allison transmissions in the first half of 2010.

"It has been proven that our trucks using Allison fully automatic transmissions are better than AMT vehicles in city traffic, start faster, and have a stronger ability to keep up with traffic flow, thus increasing the number of carriages." Boral Merv Rowlands, the fleet’s technical manager for the transportation company, commented. He also pointed out, "We can send two trucks with exactly the same load and start from the same quarry 100 kilometers north of Sydney, while driving on the F3 highway. A large portion of the Boral dump truck fleet is located in the western suburbs of Sydney, and all of these vehicles need to cross the city and travel up to 100 kilometers between the quarry and Sydney. Rowlands said, “We always want to run these trucks in two different shift modes, so that when the vehicle is unloaded, we can increase the efficiency as much as possible. At the beginning, we decided to connect the vehicle's load sensing equipment to determine Whether the truck is empty and switch to the corresponding shift mode."

“Allison’s technical team then suggested that we try the LBSS program and it worked well, so we used this technology on all trucks equipped with Allison transmissions.” LBSS is a load-based shift program Technology, which monitors the vehicle throttle/engine torque requirements and changes in acceleration of the vehicle to select the shift program that best matches the current vehicle load and operating conditions. When the vehicle load is found to be light, it is adjusted to the economy shift mode. Make sure the engine speed stays at the most fuel-efficient point. When it is found that the vehicle load increases or reaches a certain level, the power shift mode is started to provide the best performance.

Mr. Rowlands concluded, "Trucks equipped with Allison transmissions have the advantage of reducing operating time per trip, zero-faults, driver comfort and safety, and superior performance under both no-load and full-load conditions."
