May 17, 2023—Flyability, a leading provider of indoor drone solutions, has partnered with Mirion Technologies (NYSE: MIR), a global leader in radiation detection and monitoring, to launch a new radiation surveying payload for the Elios 3 drone. This innovative integration combines Mirion’s RDS-32™ radiation survey meter with Flyability’s Elios 3, an advanced indoor inspection drone equipped with LiDAR. The result is a powerful tool that allows users to create high-resolution 3D maps of their environments while simultaneously collecting radiological data. This enables precise localization of radiation sources within a detailed digital model of the asset being inspected. The Elios 3 is now the first commercially available drone capable of performing remote-controlled indoor radiation surveys. This development offers nuclear workers a safer alternative by allowing them to gather critical data from a safe distance, reducing exposure to hazardous areas. “This partnership between two industry leaders marks a significant milestone in our efforts to specialize the Elios 3 for our core markets,†said Patrick Thévoz, CEO of Flyability. “After extensive field testing in nuclear facilities, we are confident this product will play a crucial role in enhancing safety through robotics.†The integration includes a new widget in Flyability’s Cockpit app, which provides real-time readings from the RDS-32 sensor. Pilots can monitor current dose rates, cumulative exposure, and historical measurements—all essential for radiation planning and risk assessment. The live map also features color-coded trajectories based on radiation levels, making it easier to identify high-risk zones during flights. All flight data collected with the radiation payload can be reviewed using Flyability’s Inspector software. This tool generates detailed reports, displaying radiation data on a 3D map that shows the drone's path, radiation levels along the route, and specific dose rates at key locations. This visual representation helps operators make informed decisions about maintenance and safety protocols. “By combining the accuracy of the RDS-32 with the accessibility of the Elios 3, we’ve raised the bar for nuclear safety,†said Loic Eloy, President of Mirion Technologies. “We’re proud to collaborate with Flyability and continue our mission of advancing radiation safety through cutting-edge innovation.†The integration was thoroughly tested at multiple nuclear sites across the U.S. and Europe. Radiological specialists and UAS program managers conducted various missions, including: The Elios 3 has also been tested for radiation resistance as part of a project with the U.S. Department of Energy and the Idaho Environmental Coalition (IEC). Results showed the drone can withstand up to 10,000 R/h and a total accumulated dose of 4,000 R, proving its reliability in high-radiation environments.
