This report comes from Drew Smith: Firefighters Battle a Pace Bus Fire at Apple and Milwaukee in Prospect Heights On Thursday, February 6th, at 3:10 p.m., Engine 39 and Battalion 9 were called to a fire involving a Pace bus near Apple Drive and Milwaukee Avenue in Prospect Heights. Upon arrival, Engine 39 found the fire in a bus that had been parked a block west of Milwaukee. Firefighters quickly began laying a line to control the flames. Two minutes later, Battalion 9 arrived on scene and requested Squad 9 to be dispatched from RED Center. The bus driver confirmed that all passengers had safely exited and no one was injured. However, the fire had spread to the rear section of the bus, extending to both sides and underneath, including all four rear tires. Squad 9 used a second line to tackle the blaze. Due to the intense and persistent nature of the fire, along with the severe winter weather conditions, Battalion 9 asked for additional help, including Ambulance 9 and Wheeling Squad 42. Engine 39 deployed foam to assist in suppressing the fire. Squad 9 and Squad 42 used a K-12 saw to cut open the sides and floor of the bus in an effort to reach the source of the fire. Unfortunately, cutting through the floor proved ineffective due to the bus's construction, as the underside of the frame was covered by a metal plate. Meanwhile, the driver of Squad 9 had to dig out a fire hydrant to ensure a steady water supply. Many firefighters experienced equipment issues, with SCBA masks and regulators freezing up, while frozen foam coated them like snowmen. Over a dozen spare air tanks were used before the fire was finally under control. After more than an hour of hard work, a Pace wrecker was able to lift the bus, allowing firefighters to confirm that the fire was completely extinguished.
