METAL 3D Printing - SLM / DMLS
The two technologies have many similarities: both use laser scanning and selectively fuse (or melt) metal powder particles, glue them together and build them layer by layer. Similarly, the materials used in both processes are granular metals.
The difference between SLM and DMLS is due to the basis (and patents) of the particle bonding process: SLM uses metal powder with a single melting temperature and completely melts the particles, while in DMLS, the powder is composed of materials with variable melting points at high temperatures Fusion at the molecular level.
Bering 3D provides 3D printing services for various metal materials such as stainless steel, die steel, titanium alloy, aluminum alloy, and bronze.
McHenry FPD updates
Karl Klotz, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro recently visited all five stations of the McHenry Township Fire Protection District to conduct a site update. In addition to introducing new equipment, this is part of a broader effort by several local fire departments to renumber their apparatus. The visit provided a comprehensive look at the department's evolving fleet.
Among the newly acquired or updated units captured during the tour were three ambulances, two engines, two tenders, and a brand-new boat. These additions reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to modernization and improved response capabilities.
McHenry has transitioned from having just one tender to now operating with three, with each station except the downtown one equipped with one. The new twin 3,500-gallon tenders were manufactured by US Tanker and mounted on 2013 IHC 7500 chassis with extended cabs. Tender 1272 is stationed at Station 2, while Tender 1274 is at Station 4. These units are designed to provide greater water capacity and operational flexibility.
Two new Pierce engines have also been deployed since the last update, replacing older models. The latest units are built on the Impel XM chassis instead of the previous Velocity model. Engine 41 is now at Station 1, and Engine 43 is stationed at Station 3. Engine 44 at Station 4 was previously Engine 10 at Station 1. Two more engines are currently on order, with each expected to arrive every six months.
The ambulance fleet has also seen significant changes. A 2013 Type I ambulance by Osage is now in service at Station 4 as Ambulance 54. Another new ambulance, a 2012 Type I AEV, is stationed at Station 1 as Ambulance 51. Additionally, Ambulance 52 at Station 2 is a 2010 Osage Type I that was added after the last visit.
In terms of watercraft, Boat 1292 at Station 2 is a 24-foot rigid-hull inflatable built by Clark Boats in 2013. This unit enhances the department’s ability to respond to water-related emergencies across the township.
Overall, the McHenry Township FPD continues to invest in modern equipment and infrastructure, ensuring they remain well-prepared for any emergency.
