Industry self-regulation promotes China's auto exports to achieve a qualitative leap
At the recent National Conference on the Export of Automobile Products, 29 leading automotive companies, including FAW Group, jointly released the "Initiative for Auto Enterprises to Strengthen Export Self-Discipline." This proposal marked the first industry-wide self-regulation initiative in China's auto export sector. During the event, Hu Maoyuan, Chairman of SAIC Group, delivered the statement, while Wu Yanfeng from FAW Group and Tan Xuguang from Weichai Power expressed their commitment to promoting the healthy development of Chinese auto exports in line with the proposal's guidelines.
As China's automotive industry continues to grow rapidly, its exports are also expanding, with more Chinese vehicles entering global markets. According to data from January to August this year, total auto exports reached 354,900 units, a 65.21% increase compared to the same period last year. The foreign exchange earned from auto exports amounted to $4.102 billion, doubling compared to the previous year. Engine exports generated $665 million, up 27.06%, while auto parts and components brought in $9.809 billion, an increase of 33.16%. Zhang Guobao, Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that the trend of Chinese automotive products entering international markets is both necessary and feasible for the industry’s long-term growth.
However, as export volumes rise, so do challenges such as intellectual property disputes and quality issues. Media reports have highlighted problems like inadequate preparation, poor product selection, and insufficient after-sales support from some Chinese auto companies. These issues have damaged the reputation of Chinese automobiles and created negative impacts on the broader industry.
To address these concerns, strengthening industry self-discipline has become essential. The new proposal outlines six key principles aimed at improving intellectual property protection, after-sales service, and export standards. Over 29 major companies, including FAW, SAIC, BAIC, Geely, and Weichai Power, have signed the initiative, covering most of the country’s leading automakers and parts suppliers.
The proposal encourages enterprises to enhance intellectual property awareness, improve after-sales services, and commit to ethical business practices. It also promotes innovation, brand building, and sustainable development. Experts believe that self-regulation will play a crucial role in transforming China’s auto exports from being large to truly strong.
Industry leaders, including Wu Yanfeng and Tan Xuguang, stressed the importance of collaboration, quality improvement, and adherence to international standards. They emphasized the need for long-term strategies, better market positioning, and stronger partnerships to ensure sustainable growth.
Cheng Yugui from Great Wall Motor noted that signing the proposal is not just about following rules but about shaping a mindset that supports responsible and sustainable exports. Industry experts agree that while the initiative is a positive step, translating it into real action remains a challenge. As the industry evolves, maintaining this self-discipline will be key to driving China’s auto exports toward global competitiveness.
