China National Heavy Duty Truck launches fuel-efficient II engine
On August 17, at the workshop hall of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Jinan Power Co., Ltd., the company officially launched its new-generation fuel-saving product—the Fuel-Saving II engine. This innovation has sparked a new wave of excitement in the industry, marking a significant milestone in the development of energy-efficient heavy-duty engines. It is reported that the Fuel-Saving II engine has already been integrated into the Haohao series and will be gradually installed across all of the company’s product lines throughout the year.
The Fuel-Saving II engine is an upgraded version of the engine introduced earlier this year. Developed in collaboration with leading foreign design institutes, it follows the European mechanical development program while being tailored for Chinese road conditions. This new power system features independent intellectual property rights and has undergone rigorous testing, including 6,000 hours of continuous operation. The engine achieves a fuel consumption rate of 189g/kWh, meeting European standards. Field tests show that heavy vehicles equipped with this engine consume over 10% less fuel than similar domestic models, while also improving the torque reserve coefficient by more than 30%.
Wang Donghui, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of China National Heavy Duty Truck, emphasized at the launch event that rising oil prices have pushed many domestic automakers to introduce their own fuel-saving solutions. While some have made genuine efforts, others are merely following trends, leaving users confused about which products are truly effective. He stated that the Fuel-Saving II engine not only delivers real fuel savings but also outperforms other similar products in terms of efficiency.
Liu Wei, Director of the Technology Center of China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, explained that the engine's improved efficiency comes from the use of the 8500 fuel injection pump, replacing the previous supercharger with a bleed valve. This optimization enhances both the intake and fuel supply systems, significantly boosting engine performance and economy.
He further noted that the core component of the engine is the fuel injection pump. While other domestic manufacturers using Steyr engines typically use the 7100 model, which limits fuel efficiency, China National Heavy Duty Truck developed the 8500 pump in partnership with foreign companies. The 8500 pump offers superior performance, reducing fuel consumption by 3g/kWh and increasing the torque reserve coefficient by 30%. This results in better acceleration, climbing ability, and load capacity.
According to Liu Wei, the Fuel-Saving II engine costs about 500 yuan more than a standard engine. However, it saves around 5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. For a vehicle traveling 150 kilometers daily, this translates to saving 8 liters of fuel per day. At current fuel prices, the daily savings amount to approximately 35 yuan, allowing the additional cost to be recovered within a month.
In addition to the successful product launch, China National Heavy Duty Truck has seen record-breaking production and sales figures. From January to July this year, the company produced 35,385 heavy trucks, a 39.12% increase compared to the same period last year. Its market share reached 20.37%, while sales revenue hit 12.767 billion yuan, up 77.4% year-on-year. Profit and tax rose to 930 million yuan, growing over 200 times. Exports also surged, with 4,764 vehicles shipped, generating $132 million—a nine-fold increase from the same period last year.
