The development of environmental protection machinery and equipment industry is disorderly

<

China's environmental protection machinery and equipment industry has made significant progress in areas such as basic atmospheric treatment, urban sewage management, industrial wastewater treatment, and solid waste handling. However, compared to the advanced levels of foreign industries, China's large-scale environmental protection equipment still lags behind, with limited visibility in terms of technological sophistication and innovation. Guo Baolin, vice president of the China Environmental Protection Machinery Industry Association, recently told a reporter that the development of this sector not only drives related industries like general machinery, instrumentation, chemical equipment, information technology, and biochemistry, but also creates broader economic benefits. He pointed out that the main obstacle to the localization of key environmental technologies remains institutional shortcomings and a lack of innovation. Industry experts agree that with strong government support, China's environmental protection machinery industry has vast potential for growth. They suggest that the industry should seize this historical opportunity, focus on absorbing and re-innovating existing technologies, and accelerate the development of large-scale, critical environmental equipment. As a sunrise industry, the environmental protection machinery field holds immense future potential. On December 3, 2005, the State Council issued the "Decision on Implementing the Scientific Outlook on Development and Strengthening Environmental Protection," which serves as a guiding document for the coordinated development of China’s economy, society, and environment. It outlines a comprehensive plan for environmental protection over the next 15 years, emphasizing water safety, pollution control, and air quality improvement. Guo Baolin believes that the "Decision" sets higher standards for environmental protection machinery, calling for the development of key technologies and equipment with independent intellectual property rights, enhancing the industry's capacity for independent innovation, and promoting the manufacturing of major environmental equipment. This is a clear trend for the future development of the sector. He also highlighted that challenges remain, particularly in the desulfurization of large thermal power plants. Equipment for 300,000 kW or larger generators is still largely imported, and key components lack domestic intellectual property. This has led to a technological gap of about 10 to 15 years compared to developed countries. The gap isn't in standalone manufacturing, but in process integration and conceptual approaches. For example, in many developed countries, wastewater is viewed as a resource, and integrated treatment systems are well established, whereas China still lags in this area. Experts suggest that by choosing advantageous enterprises and focusing on technological upgrades, China can significantly reduce costs and boost domestic competitiveness. For instance, if all flue gas desulfurization equipment in 2005 were domestically produced, it would save billions of yuan compared to relying on foreign technology. Currently, the Chinese environmental industry still faces issues of disorder and fragmentation. To address this, experts recommend strengthening innovation systems, improving enterprise integration capabilities, and increasing investment in R&D. Supporting technology-driven SMEs and promoting collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions will be crucial for long-term success. In the process of transforming scientific achievements into practical applications, the industry should identify key areas with competitive advantages, concentrate resources, and achieve breakthroughs to ensure sustainable and high-quality development.
