Among the listed car companies, Shanghai Automotive (600104) reported a 23% drop in net profit for the third quarter, while Changan Auto (000625) saw a 32% year-on-year decline. The primary reasons behind this performance include falling vehicle prices and a significant rise in operational costs. Companies have either actively or passively adjusted their pricing strategies to remain competitive. Additionally, many have cited increased marketing expenses due to fierce market competition as a key driver of higher costs.
It's also worth noting that some companies have seen a sharp increase in accounts receivable and inventory levels compared to the start of the year, which could signal potential cash flow challenges.
Looking at the passenger car segment, the gross profit margin has further deteriorated. Except for Yaxing Bus (600213), other bus companies maintained some level of revenue growth in the third quarter. However, the gross profit margin for passenger cars remains low—typically between 10% and 15%—and has been squeezed even further due to intense competition, leading to lower profits across the board.
In the commercial vehicle category, the impact of macroeconomic control policies has been significant. Big Star Ma Automobile (600375), which specializes in bulk cement trucks and concrete pump trucks, saw its main business revenue and profits fall by around 40% in the third quarter. The company attributed this to government measures aimed at curbing investment in overheated industries, reduced fixed asset investment, and tighter bank credit for auto consumers.
On the auto parts side, profit growth has remained challenging. Although most auto parts companies continued to show strong growth in the third quarter, declining vehicle prices and rising raw material costs—especially steel—have led to a general decline in gross margins. This directly contributed to a year-on-year drop in net profits for these companies.
