Harbin Steam Turbine Factory launches gas turbine with independent intellectual property rights
In a recent review meeting, the China Machinery Industry Federation gathered industry experts to evaluate the self-designed 9F gas-steam turbine combined cycle unit developed by Harbin Steam Turbine Works Co., Ltd. The event took place in Harbin and was chaired by Xu Yingnan, director of the Power Generation Equipment Center at the China Machinery Industry Federation.
Huang Rong, deputy general manager of the Gas Turbine Division at Harbin Power Station Group, and Yang Qiguo, executive deputy general manager of Harbin Electric Power Company, were also present at the meeting. Following a thorough evaluation, the expert panel concluded that the optimized design has reached international advanced standards, with the steam turbine capable of replacing the foreign D10 model. This successful autonomous design marks a significant breakthrough for Harbin in gas-steam turbine technology, which is crucial for enhancing domestic brand competitiveness and supporting national economic growth.
The reviewed 9F gas-steam combined cycle unit represents an evolution from earlier 9E models. It incorporates multiple 9F gas-steam turbine designs, building upon the D10 steam turbine model. The project involved extensive research and development, leading to a fully three-dimensional aerodynamic design that significantly enhances the performance of the turbine’s flow path. Additionally, the multi-tooth stepped steam seal structure on the high and medium pressure rotor blades effectively reduces air leakage, while ensuring a short manufacturing cycle, cost-effectiveness, and high reliability.
Xu Yingnan emphasized that most gas turbine power plants in China rely on foreign technology. With the country's growing demand for independent intellectual property and economic efficiency, Harbin Electric took the initiative to propose a localization strategy, setting a positive example for national energy development. He also highlighted the importance of market competitiveness in the future direction of power equipment manufacturing.
China began preparing for gas turbine production in 2002, and by 2004, several major companies, including Harbin Power Station Group, Shanghai Electric Group, and Dongfang Electric Group, had participated in two rounds of bidding alongside international firms like Japan’s Mitsubishi, the U.S.-based GE, Alstom, and Germany’s Siemens. Harbin Power Station won 17 bids, followed by Dongfang with 10 and Shanghai with 9. Of the 12 units completed, 10 were produced by Harbin, with 2 by Dongfang, and 3 of them are already operational.
By the end of 2005, it was expected that 10 more units would be completed. Harbin Electric had previously adopted GE’s D10 technology, which received favorable feedback from users. Building on this foundation, the company aimed to develop its own advanced products. Through continuous optimization and improvement, Harbin successfully launched a domestically developed steam turbine with independent intellectual property rights, marking a key milestone in China’s energy sector.
