Harbin Steam Turbine Factory launches gas turbine with independent intellectual property rights
Recently, the China Machinery Industry Federation convened a review meeting in Harbin to evaluate the autonomous design of the 9F gas-steam turbine combined cycle unit developed by Harbin Steam Turbine Works Co., Ltd. The meeting was chaired by Xu Yingnan, director of the Power Generation Equipment Center at the China Machinery Industry Federation. Attendees included Huang Rong, deputy general manager of the Gas Turbine Division at Harbin Power Station Group, and Yang Qiguo, executive deputy general manager of Harbin Electric Power Company.
Following a thorough evaluation, the expert panel concluded that the optimized design has reached international advanced standards, with the steam turbine capable of replacing the foreign D10 model. This successful implementation marks a significant milestone for Harbin in the field of gas-steam turbine combined cycle technology, showcasing its growing capabilities in independent innovation. This achievement holds great importance for strengthening domestic brand competitiveness and driving economic growth.
The optimized steam turbine reviewed by the company is based on the design and operation of several 9E gas-steam combined cycle units. It incorporates extensive research and development into multiple 9F gas-steam turbines. Building upon the D10 steam turbine from foreign manufacturers, the design has been independently optimized. The use of full three-dimensional aerodynamic design technology significantly enhances the aerodynamic performance of the turbine. Additionally, the multi-tooth stepped steam seal structure on the high and medium pressure rotor blades effectively reduces air leakage, improving overall efficiency. The unit also features a short manufacturing cycle, cost-effectiveness, and high safety and reliability.
Xu Yingnan emphasized that most gas turbine power plants in China have traditionally relied on foreign technology. With the country's increasing focus on independent intellectual property and comprehensive economic efficiency, Harbin Electric took the lead in proposing a localization strategy, setting a positive example for national energy development. He also noted that the strong market potential of the Haqi unit aligns with the direction of development for power equipment manufacturing enterprises.
China began preparing for gas turbine production in 2002. By 2004, Harbin Power Station Group, Shanghai Electric Group, and Dongfang Electric Group had participated in two rounds of bidding alongside international companies such as Japan’s Mitsubishi, the U.S.-based GE, Alstom, and Germany’s Siemens. Harbin Power Station won 17 bids, while the East and Shanghai each secured 10 and 9 respectively. Out of the 12 completed units, 10 were produced by Harbin Electric, with 2 by the East, and 3 have already started generating electricity.
By the second half of 2005, it was expected that another 10 units would be completed. Harbin Electric initially adopted GE’s D10 technology, which received positive feedback from users. Building on this foundation, the company aimed to develop its own leading products. Through continuous optimization and improvement, Harbin successfully launched an optimized steam turbine with independent intellectual property rights, marking a key step toward self-reliance in critical power generation technology.
